Saint Claire - When I Die

Saint Claire is an songwriter, producer, and performer from the state of Washington. His single, When I Die, was released in 2018.

Brief

With the use of color and abstracted visuals, design an album cover that conveys the emotion of the song.

Process

Using low shutter-speed photographs and collage compositions, I experimented with a balance of warm and cool colors. This color scheme evoked the uplifting, yet sometimes sorrowful, emotions of the song.

Final Development

My final composition highlighted textures and colors best amongst my iterations. Out of my collage compositions, this version was most successful at retaining the viewer’s interest with direction and high contrast. The high contrast and broken movement of the graffiti represent the internal conflict that Saint Claire sings about in When I Die.

Reflection

Since we were asked to create abstract imagery, I had many experimentations that did not work well compositionally or thematically and went through multiple iterations. During this process, I had to stay persistent and open-minded with my ideation. This project reminded me to stay observant and curious about color and design in the world around me; I finished this project with a better understanding of how colors and compositions can evoke emotions in viewers.

If I were to revisit this project, I would:

• Work more with physical manipulation to create depth and texture

• Experiment with handwritten or crafted type
